The Beginnings
Joseph Hewetson, accompanied by his wife and child Thomas arrived in New Zealand, in 1842 on the Olympus settling in the Moutere area. By 1870 the Hewetson family had established a saw-milling venture. This was the start of the Hewetson Family’s long association with timber processing.
Growth
Generations later, Mark Hewetson purchased Motueka Lumber, a small operation manufacturing pickets and timber componentry processing low-grade sawn timber into high-value products. The company was growing - focused on innovation and technology to gain a competitive edge.
MLC Group
Mark was joined by his three brothers over the next few years, followed by his own sons and daughter in the mid-2000s. In 2014 the company became MLC group.
Genia Rebrand
A rebrand to Genia (meaning generation) better reflected the long history of the company - its history with timber, the generations past, the experienced gained and passed on. It also represented the future - the new generation of people, partnerships and a spirit of innovation which now drives the company forward.
